Whats in the pipeline for AEG?
Alderac Entertainment Group (AEG) has been producing some fantastic games in the last few years. From the carnage of The Captain is Dead to the super satisfying card crafting system first used in Mystic Vale they are on a roll. That roll doesn't look to be stopping after the recent announcement of Mariposas by Elizabeth Hargrave (Designer of Wingspan). But before I get too sidetracked with that take a look at what we are expecting to see before then and don't forget to take advantage of our 10% discount on all pre-ordered games.
Mystic Vale: Nemesis Expansion
Expected: February 2020
RRP: £39.99 / Pre-order Price: £35.95
If you have never played the base game of Mystic Vale then I can certainly recommend it and in fact we have a copy on the shelf in the games library for you to try. The game is a beautiful push your luck deck builder which allows you to adjust the cards in your deck by sleeving see through advancements over the top of the base cards in your deck. As such the size of your deck never changes but the combos and effects build into a fantastic crescendo as you compete to earn the most victory points that you can from a limited pool.
Since Mystic Vale came out there have been a large number of expansions for the game. Whilst some of these have focussed more on expanding the pool of advancements in the game, others have added new mechanics such as leaders. This one goes a step further and allows for solo play along with some additional mechanics around leaders.
Mystic Vale: Nemesis adds new advancement and vale cards to the base Mystic Vale game, giving players more card-crafting options and exciting new possibilities for combos. Leader cards in the form of titans grant abilities that can be upgraded to become even more powerful!
Curse tokens offer players a quicker path to power, but with a price at the end of the game. Nemesis cards introduce an exciting new variant for a solitaire game!
Tiny Towns: Fortunes
Expected: February 2020
RRP: £38.99 / Pre-order Price: £35.05
Tiny Towns is a short and sharp brain teaser where players have to manage the resources they choose to build the best town they can. With a limited amount of space available to build on and your opponents towns growing in points day by day, can you adjust your strategy to make the most of the resources that your opponents are providing you and have the most points at the end of the game? Definitely a game you can pull out and play a few rounds of in a row thanks to multiple building blueprints cards allowing for a lot of replayability.
The smaller creatures of the forest have created a civilization free of predators, and they look to you as mayor to guide their growing and thriving town. However, the area is small, and resources are scarce. The clever use of limited resources will determine the most successful tiny town.
In the expansion Tiny Towns: Fortune, the creatures of the forest have found a way to trick each other into thinking shiny bits of metal have arbitrary value. It's very useful — so much so that you can use this thing called "money" to get other creatures to give you almost anything in return for the right number of shiny bits. If only earning money weren't so difficult!
Point Salad (Restock)
Expected: Early 2020
RRP: £19.99 / Pre-order Price: £17.95
This was one of the smash hits at the end of last year but it was so popular in fact that we didn't manage to get a single copy in. That's good news for everyone that wants one though as it means it is available with our pre-order discount!
Point Salad is a fast and fun card drafting game for the whole family. There are over 100 ways to score points. Players may use a variety of strategies and every game of Point Salad is unique!
Cards come in six different types of veggies, and the back of each card has a different scoring method. So for instance, one scoring method may award 2 points for every carrot you have, but deduct a point for every onion. By drafting combinations of veggies and point cards that work for your strategy, you can amass the most points and win.
Expected: August 2020
Expected RRP: £19.99 / Expected Pre-order Price: £17.95
This one was a bit of a surprise to me as I hadn't heard anything about this until I was doing some research for this post. What I do know is this along with Mariposas will be part of AEG's annual Big Game Night.
In the quick-playing, card-drafting game Truffle Shuffle, players take turns selecting truffles from a shared box of overlapping cards in order to make their own arrangements of chocolates to sell. Players can complete a variety of sets, using special modifiers and action cards. With so many different chocolate truffles to unwrap and different ways to combine them, every game of Truffle Shuffle is unique!
Expected: August 2020
Expected RRP: £49.99 / Expected Pre-order Price: £44.95
Well as I mentioned before I expect this to be a big one. Designed by Elizabeth Hargrave who just produced the smash hit Wingspan this surely won't disappoint. The early images of the board and pieces look fantastic and I can't wait to try this one out.
Every spring, millions of monarch butterflies leave Mexico to spread out across eastern North America. Every fall, millions fly back to Mexico. However, no single butterfly ever makes the round trip.
Mariposas is a game of movement and set collection that lets players be part of this amazing journey.
Mariposas is played in three seasons. In general, your butterflies try to head north in spring, spread out in summer, and return south in fall. The end of each season brings a scoring round, and at the end of fall, the player with the most successful family of butterflies — i.e., the most victory points — wins the game.
